PopCVs vs Shine Resume Writing and iimjobs Pro: Pay a Portal or Do It Yourself?

By Tanul Mittal8 min read

Job portals in India are free to search and apply on. The paid part sits on top: resume writing, profile boosts, memberships. Shine and iimjobs both sell this kind of help, in different ways. Shine sells resume writing by a professional writer. iimjobs, built for management roles, sells a Pro membership.

PopCVs is the do-it-yourself alternative. You stay the author, and the AI helps you fit your resume to each job, flagging anything it adds that you didn't give it. This post looks at what each option actually sells, where each is the better buy, and where it isn't.

Every Shine and iimjobs detail below comes from their own pages, checked in October 2026: Shine's fresher resume writing page and the iimjobs FAQ. Prices change, so check before you buy.

Short answer

Choose Shine's resume writing if you have years of experience and want a writer to shape one general resume. Choose iimjobs Pro if iimjobs is your main channel for management roles; it is a membership, not resume help. Choose PopCVs to stay the author, tailor every application without a revision clock and keep a version per job.

How Shine's resume writing works

Shine sells text resume writing by experience level. As of October 2026, its resume writing page lists:

  • ₹1,299 for 0 to 1 years of experience, ₹2,199 for 1 to 4 years, ₹2,999 for 4 to 8 years, ₹3,999 for 8 to 15 years and ₹4,999 for 15 years or more.
  • Add-ons, including a cover letter (₹550 on the fresher page) and a second resume.
  • Combos, such as a profile builder and display pack for freshers (₹1,500).

The process: you place the order and upload your current resume, a writer connects with you, you get a first draft and give feedback, then you download the final resume. Shine's FAQ says you can speak to the writer over the phone.

The FAQ is also clear about how revisions close. Your resume is finalised after your approval, or automatically once you have used 3 iterations. If you don't request changes within 7 days, it closes too. After that, changes need a new purchase of the basic service.

How iimjobs's paid offer works

iimjobs is a job board for management roles. We couldn't find a resume-writing service on its public pages. What its FAQ describes for job seekers is the Pro Membership Plan, at Rs. 2,000 for 6 months as of October 2026. It adds:

  • "Insights", to compare your application against the other applications for a job.
  • A star icon on your applications for visibility.
  • Ad-free job search.
  • Highlighting of jobs posted directly by employers.
  • Your status on jobs you've applied to.

The same FAQ says plainly that Pro doesn't mean iimjobs will find jobs or follow up with recruiters for you. It is a set of features on the job board, not help with the resume itself.

What these services do well

  • A human writer. If you have twelve years across sales, operations and a startup, a writer who asks good questions on a call can find the thread you can't see. Shine's model gives you that.
  • Clear, published pricing. Shine lists its tiers and add-ons on the page, and iimjobs states its Pro price and validity in its FAQ.
  • Help inside the portal you use. If iimjobs is your main channel for management roles, seeing how your application compares can be worth more than any resume change.
  • No effort on wording. For someone who hates writing about themselves, paying to have it done is a fair choice.

Where paid portal help leaves gaps

  • One resume per purchase. A writer produces one finished resume; Shine sells a second resume as a separate add-on. Most people apply to roles that differ more than one or two versions can cover.
  • Revisions are limited in time. On Shine, the resume closes after 3 iterations or 7 days without a change request, and later changes mean buying again. That's a fair rule for a writing service, but your search will outlast it.
  • The facts still come from you. A writer works from your old resume and a phone call. If your numbers, tools and results aren't clear in your own head, the writer can't supply them, and you should check every line they add.
  • Visibility isn't fit. A highlighted application on iimjobs gets seen. Whether it matches the job is still about the resume.

What PopCVs does differently

PopCVs gives you the tools a writer would use and keeps you as the author.

  1. Start from what you have. Import your resume (PDF or Word), a resume a writer made for you, or your LinkedIn PDF, and edit it freely.
  2. A free ATS check every day. PopCVs checks the contact details, sections, bullets and keywords of your resume as built or imported in PopCVs, scores it out of 100, breaks the score down by category and lists fixes in priority order. See what a good ATS score is.
  3. A job-match score. Paste a job description from Shine, iimjobs or a careers page and see which of its keywords your resume covers and which are missing. This is a paid AI action.
  4. Tailoring that keeps to your facts. PopCVs rewrites your summary, skills and bullets toward that job using only what is already in your resume. A truth check flags any new employer, job title, date, school, degree, number or skill in the rewrite, and you approve every change before it's saved.
  5. A version per job, editable any time. Each tailored version is saved against its job, with a cover letter if you want one. Your master resume stays as it is.
  6. Single-column PDFs. Four templates with real, selectable text and no graphics or sidebars, built to parse cleanly; our guide to ATS-friendly resumes explains why. Editing and PDF downloads are free.
  7. One-time credit packs, no subscription. Paid in INR (UPI, card or netbanking) or USD (card or PayPal). Credits don't expire while your account is active, and new accounts get some free credits. See the pricing page.
  8. Inside ChatGPT and Claude. PopCVs runs a remote MCP server, so your assistant can check, tailor and export with the real PopCVs tools after you connect it once. Steps are on the MCP page; our comparison with plain ChatGPT explains why that beats pasting your resume into a chat.

What PopCVs doesn't do: there are no human writers, no job listings, no interview prep and no candidate database recruiters search. If you want any of those, a portal is the right place.

A worked example (illustrative)

Vikram (an illustrative name), a brand manager with 9 years in FMCG, is targeting category and marketing roles on iimjobs and company careers pages, with a 60-day notice period.

The paid route: he buys a Shine resume in the 8 to 15 years tier. After a call and two rounds of feedback, he has a polished general resume. Three weeks later he shortlists a growth role at a D2C startup and a trade marketing role at a large FMCG company. They need different emphasis, and his revision window has already closed.

The PopCVs route: he imports the resume the writer made, so that work isn't wasted. For the D2C role, the job match shows "performance marketing" and "CAC" missing; his digital campaign launch covers the first, so tailoring brings it forward. A suggested line about "reducing CAC by 25%" is flagged by the truth check because he never gave that number, and he rejects it. For the trade marketing role, his distributor work leads instead. Two saved versions, each true and each fitted to its job.

Quick verdict

  • Choose Shine's resume writing if you have years of experience, want a writer to shape it after a phone call, and need one strong general resume.
  • Choose iimjobs Pro if iimjobs is your main channel for management roles and you want to see how your applications compare. It is a job-board membership, not resume help.
  • Choose PopCVs if you want to stay the author, tailor every application without a revision clock, keep a version per job and see any result the AI adds flagged before you accept it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Shine's resume writing service cost?

As of October 2026, Shine's fresher resume writing page lists prices by experience: ₹1,299 for 0 to 1 years, rising to ₹4,999 for 15 years or more, with add-ons such as a cover letter. Check the page for current prices before you buy.

Does iimjobs write resumes?

We couldn't find a resume-writing service on iimjobs's public pages in October 2026. Its FAQ describes a paid Pro Membership Plan for job seekers, which adds features like application insights and a highlighted application, not resume writing.

Is it worth paying a portal to write my resume?

It can be if you have many years of experience and struggle to summarise it, and you're happy to explain your work to a writer over the phone. If you mainly need your resume to fit each job you apply to, tailoring it yourself is faster and you stay in control of every line.

Does PopCVs have human resume writers?

No. PopCVs is self-serve: an ATS check, a job-match score, AI tailoring that only uses what is already in your resume, cover letters and PDF export. You approve every change.

Can I use PopCVs from ChatGPT or Claude?

Yes. PopCVs runs a remote MCP server. Connect it once, sign in, and ask your assistant to check, tailor or export your resume with the real PopCVs tools. The steps are on the PopCVs MCP page.
