Is an ATS-Friendly Resume a PDF or a Word File?
Both formats work in most applicant tracking systems. What matters is how the file was made. Here is when to send a PDF, when to send Word, and how to export either one properly.

Canva is where a lot of Indian students make their first resume. It is free to start, the templates look professional in a minute, and the result is something you are proud to share on WhatsApp. Then someone in your hostel says "Canva resumes get rejected by ATS", and you don't know whether to believe them.
The honest answer is less dramatic. A Canva resume is a design file. An applicant tracking system (ATS) needs text it can pull out in the right order. Sometimes those two fit together, sometimes they don't, and you can check which in about two minutes. This post covers how Canva resumes work, what they do well, where a design can trip up a parser, and when to send a plain single-column file instead.
Every Canva detail below comes from Canva's own resume templates page and help centre, checked in October 2026.
Send a Canva resume when a person reads it first: portfolios, printouts, direct emails and design or creative roles. For job portals, careers pages and placement portals, send a plain single-column file with real text and standard headings. Test any Canva PDF by pasting its text into a plain text editor. People in visual fields often need both.
| Canva resume | Plain single-column resume (PopCVs) | |
|---|---|---|
| Price model | Free to start; premium elements need a paid plan or content licence | Free editing and PDFs; one-time credit packs for AI features, no subscription |
| Layout | Placed text boxes, columns, icons and photos | One column, real selectable text, no graphics or sidebars |
| ATS check | Use the copy-paste test | Free daily score out of 100 with prioritised fixes |
| Job-specific tailoring | You edit each version yourself | Job-match score and tailoring that flags new facts |
| PDF Standard, with Flatten PDF switched off | Single-column PDF built to parse cleanly | |
| Best for | Portfolios, printouts and creative roles | Portals, careers pages and placement portals |
You pick a template from Canva's resume gallery, which has filters such as Simple, Minimalist, Corporate, Creative, Infographic and Photo. You edit the text in the boxes, swap colours and fonts, add a photo if you like, and download. Canva's templates page suggests downloading in PDF, JPG or PNG to attach to emails or online applications.
Under the hood, a Canva page is a set of separate elements placed on a canvas: text boxes, shapes, icons and images. That is what makes it flexible for design. It is also the root of most parsing questions, because a page made of placed boxes has no single natural reading order.
If a human is the first reader, a well-made Canva resume is a perfectly good choice.
When you apply through a company careers page or a large job portal, the ATS extracts the text from your file and splits it into fields: name, phone, email, job titles, employers, dates, education and skills. Recruiters then search and filter on those fields. We explain the full process in what an ATS-friendly resume is.
For that to work, the parser needs real text, in a sensible order, under headings it recognises. Design choices that can get in the way:
None of this means every ATS mishandles every Canva file. Systems differ, and a simple Canva design exported as a standard PDF can come out clean. The point is that you can't tell by looking at the page. Canva itself gives similar advice: the FAQ on its own templates page says to avoid text boxes, tables and images and to use clear headings such as "Work Experience" and "Skills".
If it reads in order, your design is probably fine for most portals. If lines are jumbled or missing, that is roughly what a parser is working with too. More on file types in PDF or Word for an ATS.
PopCVs is built for the other end of the trade-off: a resume that parses cleanly first, and looks clean rather than designed.
What PopCVs doesn't offer: design-heavy or multi-column templates, colour themes, icons or a photo on the resume. If you want those, use Canva for that version.

Same content, two files, each sent where it fits.

It depends on the template and how you export it. A simple single-column Canva design exported as a standard PDF can come out as clean text. Multi-column layouts, text inside images and icons for contact details can be read out of order or missed. Test your file by copying all its text from the PDF into a plain text editor.
Canva's resume template gallery includes simple and minimalist designs, and its own FAQ on that page advises avoiding text boxes, tables and images and using clear headings for an ATS-friendly resume. Pick the plainest single-column layout and follow that advice.
Not for a job application. Canva's help centre says flattening converts the file into a static image. That is useful for printing, but a parser needs real text, so leave Flatten PDF switched off when you download a resume.
For a portfolio, a printout you hand over in person, an email to a person you know will read it, or a design, media or creative role where the layout itself shows your skill. For portal and careers-page applications, send a plain single-column file as well.
No. PopCVs has four single-column templates with real, selectable text and no graphics, photos or sidebars. They are built to parse cleanly, not to stand out visually. If you need a designed resume, Canva is the better tool for that version.

An ATS-friendly resume is one that software can read correctly and a recruiter can find by searching. Here is what that means in practice: layout, headings, file type and keywords.
An ATS score is a checker's estimate of how well software can read your resume and how closely it matches a job. Here is what the number means and what actually raises it.
