Data Analyst Resume for Freshers: Skills and Projects That Count

By Tanul Mittal3 min read

Entry-level data analyst roles attract graduates from engineering, commerce, statistics, economics and management. On paper, many of them list the same skills: SQL, Excel, Power BI, Python. The resumes that stand out show what the candidate found when they used those tools on real data.

This post covers the skills section, projects, certifications and bullet writing. Our data analyst resume guide has full sample sections.

The core skills, in order of importance

For most fresher analyst roles in India, recruiters look for:

  1. SQL: joins, group by, window functions, subqueries. This is the skill most often tested in the first round.
  2. Excel: pivot tables, lookups (VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP), conditional formatting, basic charts. Many analyst jobs still run on spreadsheets.
  3. One BI tool: Power BI or Tableau. Read the job description and match it.
  4. Python or R basics: pandas for cleaning and summarising data, matplotlib or seaborn for charts.
  5. Statistics fundamentals: averages and distributions, correlation, sampling, A/B test basics.
  6. Communication: turning a finding into one clear sentence a manager can act on.

List them grouped and plainly:

  • Analysis: SQL (MySQL, PostgreSQL), Excel, Python (pandas)
  • Visualisation: Power BI, Tableau
  • Statistics: descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing basics

Only list what you have used in a project. Interviewers often ask you to write a query on the spot.

Projects that get attention

Two or three good projects beat six course exercises. A strong analyst project has:

  • A question. "Which products drive repeat purchases?" is a question. "Analysis of a sales dataset" is not.
  • Real or realistic data. Public sources like data.gov.in, a family or local business's records (with permission), sports data, or open datasets you cleaned yourself.
  • Cleaning work. Messy data is the job. Mention what you fixed: duplicates, missing values, inconsistent dates.
  • A finding. One or two specific insights, stated plainly.
  • An output. A dashboard, a short report or a notebook that someone can open.

Project ideas with an Indian angle:

  • Crop yield or rainfall trends by district from public government data
  • IPL match data: what actually predicts a win at a given venue
  • A local shop's sales by month and product, with a recommendation on stock
  • Air quality across cities over a year, and what changes in winter

Writing project bullets

Use question + method + finding. Illustrative example:

Retail Sales Analysis (Excel, SQL, Power BI) | GitHub link

  • Cleaned two years of sales records from a family-run grocery store (about 18,000 rows), fixing duplicate bills and inconsistent product names.
  • Wrote SQL queries to compare monthly sales by category and find slow-moving items.
  • Built a Power BI dashboard showing that 12 products made up about half of revenue, which the owner now uses to plan weekly orders.

Every number in your bullets must be real. If you don't have a measured result, describe the scope and what the output was used for.

Certifications

Certifications help most when you don't have an analytics internship. Common ones include the Google Data Analytics certificate, Microsoft's Power BI certification (PL-300), and SQL or Python courses on major learning platforms. List the full name and the year.

Because many applicants list the same certificates, pair each with a project that uses it.

The page layout

  1. Name, contact, LinkedIn, GitHub or portfolio link
  2. Objective or short summary naming the role, for example "Data Analyst Trainee"
  3. Education with CGPA or percentage, and relevant coursework (statistics, econometrics, DBMS)
  4. Projects, two or three
  5. Internships, if any
  6. Skills, grouped
  7. Certifications

Keep it to one page and send a text-based PDF.

Tailor to the job description

Analyst job descriptions vary: one wants Power BI and stakeholder reporting, another wants Python and A/B testing. Before you apply, check which of the posting's tools and tasks your resume already mentions, and add the ones that are true for you, both in the skills list and in a project bullet.

Frequently asked questions

What skills should a fresher data analyst put on a resume?

SQL and Excel are the core for most entry-level roles in India, followed by one BI tool (Power BI or Tableau) and basic Python or R. Add statistics fundamentals and the ability to explain findings in plain language.

Which projects are good for a data analyst resume?

Projects that start from a real question and end with a finding: sales or inventory analysis for a real business, public government data, cricket or sports data, or a dashboard someone used. Avoid listing only the standard course datasets without your own analysis.

Is the Google Data Analytics certificate worth adding?

Yes, list it under certifications if you completed it. It helps more when paired with a project that applies what it taught, because many applicants list the same certificate.

Can a non-engineering graduate become a data analyst?

Yes. B.Com, B.Sc, BBA and economics graduates regularly move into analyst roles. Show SQL, Excel and a domain project, such as a finance or marketing analysis, that uses your background.
