Open any stack of accountant resumes in India and you will see the same line: "Good knowledge of Tally, GST and MS Excel." It tells the reader almost nothing. Did you pass vouchers for a ten-person shop, or file monthly GST returns for twelve clients and reconcile their input tax credit? A finance manager wants to know which.
This post shows how to turn each common skill into evidence. For a full sample resume, see our accountant resume guide.
Replace "knowledge of" with what you did
The fix is the same for every skill: name the task, the volume and the result. Compare:
Weak: Knowledge of GST.
Stronger (illustrative): Prepared monthly GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B for 8 small business clients and reconciled purchase registers against GSTR-2B before filing.
The second version shows the returns, the scale and the reconciliation habit that prevents mismatches. Use your own real numbers.
Tally Prime
Tally is still the main accounting software for many small and mid-size Indian businesses. Show the depth of your use:
Voucher entry: sales, purchase, payment, receipt, journal, contra
Inventory: stock items, godowns, batch tracking
GST setup, e-invoicing and e-way bills, if you handled them
Example bullet: Maintained books in Tally Prime for a trading business with about 400 vouchers a month, including inventory across two godowns and monthly bank reconciliation for three accounts.
GST and TDS
Tax compliance is often the main reason a business hires an accountant. Be specific about:
Returns: which ones (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, annual returns) and how many entities
Reconciliation: input tax credit reconciliation with GSTR-2B
TDS: deduction, deposit and quarterly returns (for example 24Q and 26Q), Form 16/16A
Notices and assessments: if you helped prepare responses, say so
Use the return names exactly as they appear on the GST portal, since that is how recruiters search for them. If your experience is from an articleship or internship, say you prepared the returns under a CA's review. That is honest and still valuable.
Excel
Every accountant claims Excel. Show the level:
Pivot tables for ageing analysis or expense summaries
VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP and SUMIFS for reconciliations
Data validation and templates others use
Basic charts for monthly MIS
Example: Built an Excel template for receivables ageing that the sales team uses every week to follow up on overdue invoices.
Reconciliations, payables and closing
These are the everyday work of most accounting roles, so make them concrete:
Bank reconciliations: how many accounts, how often
Month-end and year-end closing, provisions, and support for statutory or internal audit
For B.Com freshers
You may not have a job yet, but you probably have more practice than you think:
Articleship or internship at a CA firm: the clients' industries, the returns and audits you supported.
Practical training or certification courses in Tally and GST: list them with the year, and mention any practical assignments.
Family business or freelance bookkeeping: real books, even small ones, count.
Professional course progress: CA, CMA or CS level and status, written plainly.
Put your qualification and any professional course progress near the top, followed by practical experience.
Match the employer's system
Small and mid-size businesses mostly use Tally. Larger companies often run SAP, Oracle or another ERP, and their postings say so. If you have used the system they name, put it in your summary and skills. If you haven't, don't claim it; your Tally and Excel depth still shows you can learn it.
Before applying, compare your resume with the job description and check that the returns, tools and tasks it lists appear in your resume wherever they are true for you.
Frequently asked questions
What skills should I put on an accountant resume in India?
Tally Prime or your company's ERP, GST return filing and reconciliation, TDS, bank reconciliation, accounts payable and receivable, and Excel (pivot tables, lookups). Add finalisation of accounts and audit support if you have done them.
How do I write a B.Com fresher accountant resume?
Lead with your B.Com, any CA, CMA or articleship progress, and a practical training or internship. Describe exactly which entries, returns or reconciliations you handled, even if supervised.
Should I mention CA Inter or CMA progress on my resume?
Yes. Write the level and status clearly, for example 'CA Intermediate: Group I cleared, May 2025'. Employers hiring accountants often value partial progress.
Is SAP or Tally more important for an accountant resume?
It depends on the employer. Small and mid-size businesses mostly use Tally; large companies often use SAP, Oracle or another ERP. Read the job description and lead with the system it names.
When an Indian recruiter asks a fresher for a CV, they almost always mean a one-page resume. Here is the format section by section, a sample layout, and how to fix an old-style CV template.
Both formats work in most applicant tracking systems. What matters is how the file was made. Here is when to send a PDF, when to send Word, and how to export either one properly.
Hospitals screen nursing resumes for registration, qualification and ward experience before anything else. Here is how to present each one clearly, for freshers and experienced nurses.
